March 20, 2023 – As we draw closer to the newly modernized LAA tariff implementation date of April 1, 2023, we realize roster lawyers may be wondering what this change will look like and how it will affect them.

In addition to new block fees to properly compensate for time spent visiting clients in custody, LAA has ensured that the new blocks for resolutions and trials appropriately compensate for both attendance and preparation.
For example, if you’re handling a multi-day trial, here’s what billing might look like with the new tariff compared to the old tariff:
As seen above, a three-day trial that may have only paid just under $3,500 will now allow lawyers to invoice over $9,000 – proper compensation for your time and work.
And here’s an example of global resolution with a Gladue report:
For guilty pleas, in this example, the new tariff may allow lawyers to bill over $700 more.
