Greg Lazin joins Legal Aid Alberta
March 6, 2025
I am pleased to announce that Greg Lazin has joined Legal Aid Alberta as Fractional General Counsel, starting part-time on March 3, 2025. Greg will lead our legal advisory team, providing strategic legal advice to support decision-making across the organization. He will provide advice on legal issues that impact LAA and our clients, and he will assist in mitigating legal, regulatory and commercial risks.
Greg articled with a small Edmonton law firm in 1982, before being admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1983 and British Columbia Bar in 1997. He has served on our High-Cost Committee, is a member of LAA’s Major Cases Panel and has been a roster lawyer for decades.
With an extensive background in criminal law, Greg has handled over 2,000 trials, Charter Applications and Administrative Tribunal Hearings. He defended a client in the longest criminal trial in Edmonton’s legal history, has been appointed as an ad-hoc prosecutor and was recently successful before the Supreme Court in R. v. LaFrance, 2022, SCC 32.
His expertise also extends to high-level civil litigation, where he has negotiated and resolved complex matters involving millions of dollars. Greg’s extensive trial history equips him with the knowledge of when to negotiate and when to litigate.
Our current General Counsel, Doug Ingersoll, will retire at the end of March, after more than 15 years with LAA.
Please join me in welcoming Greg to our team and in expressing our gratitude to Doug for his years of dedicated service and leadership.
Sincerely,
John Panusa, KC
President and CEO, Legal Aid Alberta
At what point do EPO clients need to apply and qualify financially for representation?
EPO Duty Counsel Certificates are issued to Duty Counsel for Claimants and Respondents at the EPO review stage. There is no financial requirement for an EPO DC Certificate.
Please note that once the EPO is set for an Oral Hearing (EVV), the Duty Counsel Certificate is considered concluded.
From that point – a client must apply to Legal Aid Alberta and qualify financially before coverage for an EPO Oral Hearing.
