Staying informed is the best way to ensure timely access to justice for yourself and other Albertans.
On the first Monday of 2021, Legal Aid Alberta received more than 1,600 calls from Albertans in need of legal help. January is especially busy because the courts have just reopened after the holidays.
As an essential service, our frontline staff and lawyers continue to deliver legal services to thousands of Albertans amid COVID-19. LAA is working hard to connect with the province’s most vulnerable and those who need legal aid the most.
Staying informed is the most important thing you can do to help us ensure timely access to justice for yourself and other Albertans. We can all play a role in helping our most vulnerable citizens get the legal support they need.
1. Take two minutes to see if you may qualify for Legal Aid. Please note that we do not cover landlord and tenant issues.
2. If you don’t likely qualify for Legal Aid, another agency in Alberta may be able to help you.
3. Before you call, get some simple documents ready.
• Personal ID or driver’s license.
• Documentation that proves your financial situation such as a pay stub, bank statements, income support statements.
• Documentation that proves your spouse/partner’s financial situation.
4. Find out about legal services during COVID-19. We are in constant communication with Alberta Justice and the courts. Public health requirements as well as changes made by Alberta Courts have resulted in some changes to procedures.
5. Take time to get familiar with some common legal terms.
If you are in a family violence situation and need an emergency protection order, please call immediately.
