October 27 marks Duty Counsel Day in Canada — a day to recognize and give thanks to the unsung heroes of the justice system: duty counsel lawyers.

Legal Aid Alberta held its fourth consecutive year of Duty Counsel Day celebrations with classroom talks across the province and courthouse visits in Edmonton and Calgary.

Thank you to all lawyers and staff who helped us shine a light on the vital role of duty counsel — whether through educating young minds or connecting with justice systems partners and the public.

Raising awareness in Alberta schools

Hundreds of students in close to 20 classrooms across Alberta signed up to learn about their legal rights and how to use them through the Duty Counsel Day in the Classroom initiative.

Educators registered for a downloadable teaching kit complete with curriculum-based information and activities to help students get a better understanding of duty counsel and the free services they provide.

Students and educators at five schools in Edmonton, Calgary, St. Albert and Whitecourt chatted one-on-one with LAA duty counsel lawyers to hear more about first-hand experiences, why duty counsel lawyers matter and how to enter into the profession.

Across Canada, educators throughout 10 provinces participated in Duty Counsel Day in the Classroom.

Conversations (and candy) at the courthouse

On Friday, October 25, LAA staff and lawyers headed to the Edmonton and Calgary courthouses to hand out Halloween candy and strike up important conversations with stakeholders and the public. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!
